What is Japanese Knotweed?
Japanese knotweed is a resilient and invasive weed which can grow over 2 metres tall, suppressing other plant growth around it. In Japan the natural environment supplies the insects and fungus which feed on the weed and keep it in check. This is not the case in the environments in to which it has been introduced such as the UK. The creeping underground stems, called rhizomes, can penetrate to a depth of 2 meters making it difficult to fully eradicate the weed without professional assistance. Unless you get rid of the whole root system the weed will just keep coming back to blight your grounds.
Japanese knotweed dies back over winter, but do not be lulled in to a false sense of security. Come Spring it will have returned, sending out fresh shoots which have the appearance of asparagus stems. By early summer it will have grown to resemble a dense batch of tall bamboo canes, overshadowing and engulfing everything around it. Japanese knotweed can be mistaken for other plants and this is why identifying it correctly is key. By contacting Southwest Knotweed you can quickly have an answer and if it is the weed you hoped it wasn’t, we can recommend an appropriate course of removal.
What Damage can Japanese Knotweed Cause?
Left unchecked this invasive weed will not only suppress the plants you want to thrive, but can penetrate structures within your grounds. It can grow through a number of strong surfaces like tarmac and will penetrate any cracks in concrete. Without treatment you could find the weed causing damage to paving, drains, driveways and even boundary walls. Left to grow it can also cause damage to your buildings and penetrate cavity walls. Whether you have Japanese knotweed at a residential or commercial property, reduce the chance of damage by allowing Southwest Knotweed to treat it early.
