Bamboo – Excavation and ongoing monitoring
Southwest Knotweed advised our client that excavation would be the recommended remedial strategy for this clump of Bamboo, followed by further monitoring for areas which were inaccessible, such as the boundary wall foundations and tarmacked drive, which had been lightly exploited from Bamboo runners.
Initially, Culms were cut down to stump level (and removed from site), clump maturity excavated & disposed of, and new topsoil brought in to replace any depth lost from excavation.
After Southwest Knotweed excavated all visible bamboo maturity, the programme of works, then included an additional foliar Herbicidal treatment programme, specifically for areas that were inaccessible i.e., tarmac and around drainage systems, with an additional monitoring period – taking place between October / November. This is the optimum time for the herbicide to translocate into the network of rhizome underground, making treatment much more effective.
Using an excavator, the initial step was to remove the dense rhizomatous material close to the surface. 80-90% of Bamboo plant matter resides in the top 300mm – 500mm of soil. Following the disruption and removal of the densest area of rhizome, the soil is then screened for rhizome fragments. All rhizomatous waste was bagged up, canes loaded into a trailer and finally transported to a commercial green waste site.
