Identifying Crowns & Roots (Rhizome)

A complex underground network

Japanese Knotweed Rhizome (Root System) is very complex network of underground rhizomes (roots) and can produce a new plant from a small piece of rhizome the size of your little finger nail and only 0.7 grams in weight.

Rhizomes will grow laterally from the crowns up to 7 metres and can grow as deep as 3 metres. The rhizome is dark from the outside and will snap like a carrot, the centre of the rhizome is a orange/yellow colour.

The rhizome of the plant creates crowns which create crown buds which develop into stems.
